Red Lip: 3 Ways

red lip tutorial The red lip. Beauty's most iconic lip, and one of the most glamorous and classic ways to embrace lipstick. This look has been around a lot longer than any of us, but the principal remains the same, find which version of it works for you, and stick with it. With this in mind I thought I'd experiment and try out my favourite lip trend in three different variations; matte, glossy and sheer, here is how I got on...

When it comes to wearing red lipstick matte is always the finish I favour. It's easy, flattering and tends to last pretty well. Before opting to sport a bold lip of any colour I always make sure my lips are in good condition, especially when going for matte formulas as this can usually result in some pretty chapped looking lips if your not careful. Give your lips a little scrub and prep them with a lip balm, something discreet preferably I love the Burt's Bees Balms. After this it's time to go in with your lip pencil, I used an Astor Lip Pencil in Ruby Red and carefully made my outline of choice, I usually always cheat a little on the top lip by exaggerating my cupids bow slightly. Once your happy with the shape fill in the rest of your lips with the pencil, I then like to give everything a little smudge with my finger to stop it all looking too 'done'. Then it's time for the main event, Macs Ruby Woo is hands down my favourite matte red. It flatters my pale complexion, doesn't make my teeth look yellow and the formula is spot on. I apply this straight from the bullet and just follow the natural shape of my lips, once this is done, that's me, the perfect matte red lip.

The phrase 'glossy' and 'lips' don't usually go down well with myself, I don't mind lipgloss but I usually tend to stick with pretty safe shades. However, on a recent night out I decided to get experimental and go for a super bright, super glossy lip...and I really liked it! To create this glamorous pout I used the same Astor pencil to create my preferred shape and then went right in with the Sleek Gloss Me Lip Shine in Kiss & Tell*. The highly pigmented gloss is really easy to apply, even if you don't have the steadiest of hands and it's surprisingly long lasting. This is definitely a lipstick look I will be trying out again with some other colour combinations.

Finally I created what I would refer to as an 'everyday' red lip, a very non offensive hint of tint. This one is perfect for anyone wanting to dip their toe in the world of lipstick as it eases you in gently. I used the same Astor pencil yet again and teamed it with some of my Burt's Bees lip balm. I love the subtlety of this look, it's really fresh and modern and perfect for more or less anyone.

No matter how you wear it, there isn't much that will make you feel quite as glamorous or ladylike as a good old fashioned red lip will. Now just to learn how to eat without it ending up all over my face and we'll be sorted...
