Birchbox UK: April 2014

Birchbox UK April 2014

For the past two months I've found myself in a bit of a beauty rut.  Using the same products everyday and not really giving any new brands a try.  Having not much luck with beauty subscription boxes in the past, I was hesitant to try.  As I'd heard so many good things about Birchbox from their social media I decided I would give them a try and see if I can discover some new brands and products.  Here's what you can expect from the April 2014 box.

Birchbox UK April 2014

First things first, let me explain what Birchbox is for those unaware.  For £10 a month + £2.95 shipping you get a box filled with around 4-5 beauty and lifestyle samples, including some full sized products too.  Compared to other beauty subscription boxes, from the past two I've had from Birchbox I can really tell that there's a lot of effort put in towards the theme of the boxes.  The samples I've had are always a generous size too so we're off to a good start!

The April 2014 box's theme was Good Enough To Eat so it contained products with food based ingredients such as cucumber, popcorn, almonds and apples.  One or two products don't quite fit into the category but I think they've done a great job with the theme.  There's also quite a few recipes for DIY beauty and salted caramel cupcakes on the birchbox website so the theme doesn't just end with the box.  Here is what's inside this months box.

Birchbox UK April 2014

The Balm Cosmetics How 'Bout Them Apples? Cheek & Lip Cream (£26 for Palette)
First of all, can I just say how cute this product is? It's a miniature palette which contains the shade Pie: a bright hot pink shade which you can use on your cheeks and lips.  The texture is silky soft and the shade applies quite subtle which makes it perfect for blending.  Also quite a good excuse to carry around in my makeup bag as it takes up no space at all.

Lord & Berry Couture Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil (£10)
I always see Lord & Berry products on ASOS but I've never gotten around to trying their products.  I'm a big fan of Kohl pencils so I had high hopes for this one.  If you want something blendable for a smokey eye, this would be perfect however I find it a little too smudgy for what I'd use it for.  Not so much for me but I'll pop it into my makeup bag for on the go touch ups.

Colour Club Gala's Gems Nail Polish in Aquamarine Azulino (£15 for set of 4)
A new nail polish is always welcome in my beauty stash.  What I really liked about this is that Birchbox actually let you pick which shade you wanted before the box arrived so I wasn't left with a horrible shade I'd never wear.  To be safe I chose the pearlescent blue shade but I did quite like the look of the green too.  Usually with these kinds of shades you have to put on about 3 layers but I was pleasantly surprised to find this is a one coat wonder.  I actually first tried it out over the top of a black nail polish and it completely blocked out the colour.  Probably my favourite out of the whole box.

Yes To Cucumbers Facial Wipes (£4.99)
I've been so good with my skincare routine lately but when I saw these in my box, it didn't take long before the laziness kicked in and they were much more tempting than my usual double cleanse routine.  If I do use face wipes, they're usually of the cucumber variety but sadly I wasn't a fan this time.  I had a full face of makeup on but it seemed to not take off that much at all and after I'd used them it left my skin feeling tingly but not in a good way, more like burning.  Back to the intensive skincare routine for me!

Campos De Ibiza Almendra Body Milk (£16.55)
When I heard Laura Mercier was going to be in the box I was really excited but sadly I received this instead.  It has a very fresh, almond, clean scent and feels hydrating on the skin but everytime I open the lid, it goes everywhere.  It does the job but I don't feel that the product is something to be excited about.

Propercorn Sweet Coconut & Vanilla Popcorn (£0.90)
Now I love a good sweet popcorn, but I can't stand the taste of coconut.  Sadly another miss for me but other people in my family can enjoy them.  It's pretty good they're under 40 calories though!

So as you can see, this months box was a little hit and miss for me personally.  Some great discoveries like the nail polish and cheek palette but the rest felt a little bland.  For that reason I've decided to cancel my subscription after this month.  However the great thing about Birchbox is you can order a box after it's been revealed so if you like a particular box from that month, you can order and you won't be disappointed with the contents.  No regular subscription from me but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out on future boxes.

If you do want to give Birchbox a try, you can use this link and you'll be able to get 50 points to spend in the Birchbox Online Store.  There's usually codes flying around for free delivery on your first box too so make sure you do a little digging before you start up your subscription!
