Red Nails, Red Lipstick

Red Nail Polish and Lipstick, MAC Russian Red, Illamasqua Whack, Topshop Rio Rio, Avon Vamp It Up

For those of you who may be a little afraid to wear bold reds, if there’s ever a time to experiment it’s now.  As Halloween is just around the corner, it’s time to break out of your comfort zone and try something new makeup wise.  I think red is such a versatile colour which can look both classic and daring at the same time.  Whether you’re planning on channeling Marilyn Monroe or a scary vampire, choosing the right red is the perfect place to start.

The Classic Red

If there’s one thing a girl should own, it’s a classic red lipstick.  The look is timeless and everyone can pull it off.  The lipstick should be blue toned which helps your teeth appear whiter and for this look I personally prefer a matte or velvet/satin formula.  Topshop’s Rio Rio is a satin matte finish so it doesn’t appear glossy or feel too drying on the lips.  If you’d prefer a slightly sheerer alternative, the Revlon Lip Butter in Candy Apple will give a lovely stain to the lips.  Team it with a glossy red nail polish such as Topshop’s Pillar Box or Avons Real Red.

The Orange Toned Red

If a bold red isn’t for you, you might want to try a slightly more orange toned red shade.  I don’t think I’m daring enough to pull off a complete orange lipstick so Topshops Infrared Lipstick is as daring as I’ll go.  It’s one of those shades which looks amazing on everyone but if you find it a little too much, just dabb it on lightly.  For a nail polish shade, Illamasqua’s Whack has a lovely glossy finish but if you’d like it slightly more red, go for Barry M’s Blood Orange Nail Polish.

The Vampy Red

If you plan on going for a scary look this Halloween, the vampy red look is for you.  Think deep dark reds with a cool undertone.  The ultimate classic for me has to be MAC Russian Red as it’s sort of inbetween the classic red but still dark enough to carry off a bold look.  Last Halloween I wore a lipstick from Lush’s Emotional Brilliance collection in Power* but for this look I think the shade Decisive* would look great if you want a highly pigmented, long lasting shade with a bit of extra dimension to it.  Again my nail polish of choice would be a highly glossy dark shade like Avon’s Vamp It Up which will complete the look..

Let me know your favourite out of the three looks.  Personally I’m really loving the Vampy Red look at the moment now we’re getting into the Autumn/Winter season.
